Simulation of IEEE Benchmark Models using ATP-EMTP for Subsynchronous Resonance Studies

Abstract

Subsynchronous Resonance (SSR) were identified in the first time by incident in Mohave power plant, and it become the research topic of a series works for several years. Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) has also developed two standard models to the basic research on SSR: "First Benchmark" and "Second Benchmark". In this paper, the author presents the theoretical basis of SSR phenomenon, modeling elements of a typical system for the detailed study. Additionally, the "First Benchmark" and "Second Benchmark" was established and simulated by ATP software. This study aimed to set a base platform to perform specific studies, more details about the SSR phenomenon in Vietnam power systems.
