Performance Analysis of LDPC for Reliable Image Transmission in Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks

Most of applications of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) focus on transmission of a small amount of text data. Image transmission is in doubt since it requires much more bandwidth and stricter quality of service. The main reason is the unreliable nature of wireless medium and the energy constraints of sensor nodes to prevent the deployment of complicated communication scheme. Up to date, works on image transmission on WSNs have been doing only on simulation. This paper proposes a real life system to transmit image over WSNs. Moreover, we use Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) code, to increase significantly reliability of image transmission over WSNs. The proposed method has been analyzed a real mode test-bed deployed in laboratory in variation of the size of image, the size of transmitted packets, the number of travelling hops. The results have shown that it is feasible to transmit small to medium-sized image through WSN in the support of LDPC codes.
